FAQs
How do I care for my fresh cut flowers?
Place your bouquet in a clean vase, vessel, or jar filled with water. For the longest lasting flowers, trim stems and replace water every 2 days. Keep your flowers in a cool location and away from sunny windows, ripening fruit, and essential oil diffusers.
How do I care for my dried flowers?
All of our dried bouquets and wreaths are composed of 100% farm-grown and foraged flowers and foliage. Flowers are harvested, hung to dry, and stored in cardboard until being assembled into your bouquet or wreath. We use absolutely no sprays or chemical treatments of any kind to preserve our dried flowers! Your Dried Floral Wreath or Everlasting Bouquet will last for years with proper care and storage. For best results, display in an area away from wind, rain, and direct sunlight (indoors or on a covered porch is best). Sunlight will cause the flowers to lose their color over time. When not displayed, store your dried florals in a cardboard box in a temperature/humidity controlled area. Dried florals are fragile, so please handle with care.
How do I plant my dahlia tuber?
What is a "dahlia tuber?" Tubers are like bulbs… you plant them in the ground and then your dahlia plant will grow from an eye above the neck of the tuber. Your tuber will look a little like a small, elongated potato. A single tuber will grow a nice robust dahlia plant that you can cut flowers from again and again Summer through frost! Some tubers are small, and some are large; size does not matter as long as you have a healthy tuber with at least 1 viable eye. All tubers have been inspected and should have at least 1 eye.
When do I plant my tubers? For the Black Mountain area, the best time to plant is late April/early May. You may safely plant any time after last frost through the end of June. Store your tuber in plastic wrap or in a plastic bag with peat moss until you are ready to plant. Tubers can easily dry out if left unprotected. Tubers MUST be planted this year and cannot be saved until next season!
How do I plant my tubers? Plant in full sun! Tubers should be planted horizontally with the eye or sprout facing up. Plant your tubers 3-6 inches deep. Do not water until you see green growth emerging from the ground. It can take a couple weeks for this to occur. Try to plant when the ground is dry and rain isn't in the forecast. If it does rain, don't worry about it!
How do I care for my dahlia plant? It is a good idea to stake your plant, as the cut flower varieties we sell are taller than bedding varieties. Dahlias need lots of water once they begin growing. They are also heavy feeders. You can use a general-purpose organic fertilizer to feed them a couple times during the summer. Cutting blooms deep into the plant will encourage more flowers! So cut hard and often to keep the blooms coming Summer through first frost.
Can I leave my dahlia in the ground over the winter? Cold temps and too much rain will rot your tuber. Our growing zone, 7A, is on the border for being able to overwinter dahlia tubers in the ground. Many flower farmers in our area leave theirs in the ground with great success. If you choose to leave your plant in the ground, make sure you mulch it well. You may also dig your tuber clump after 2 hard frosts and store it in peat moss or wood shavings. Store between 40-50 degrees for the winter months. If you do this, you can divide your clump and have many more plants for next season. Do not let your tubers freeze or they will be ruined!

What do you mean by “seasonal?”
Every stem in the bouquet you purchase is grown on our farm, responsibly foraged from surrounding land, or, in very rare cases, purchased from another local grower. That means you will receive flowers that are blooming here in the mountains at the time of your purchase. For example, an early Spring bouquet would include ranunculus and poppies, but a late Summer bouquet might include dahlias and sunflowers. For this reason, we are not able to take special requests for certain flowers to be included in your bouquet; we always use the flowers that are at peak freshness and beauty. Our fresh flower season typically runs April through mid-October, and we offer dried flowers during the winter months. We do not import flowers from other countries; you are receiving a fresh, 100% local product.
Are your flowers organic?
We do not have an organic certification at this time, however we strive to use sustainable growing methods without the use of synthetic chemicals. We utilize earth-friendly growing practices such as crop rotation, no-till methods, regenerative soil inputs, naturally sourced soil amendments, and beneficial insects and microbes. There are absolutely no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides used on our farm! Local is important to us, so we do our best to shop as locally as possibly for our seeds, soil amendments, and field supplies. Our farm is certified Appalachian Grown, and we are also a member of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers. Our bouquets are wrapped in recyclable and compostable kraft paper sleeves, and our vessels are all neutral in color and easily reusable.
Why local flowers?
According to the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers, almost 80% of fresh flowers sold in the US and Canada are grown outside of North America. Many imported flowers are grown by workers who are not fairly compensated, using harmful chemicals, and have travelled hundreds of miles and hours before they arrive in your hands. Local flowers are different. Local flowers represent a much more diverse selection of blooms, they are grown in a more responsible manner, and they are fresh and long-lasting. Most importantly, when you buy locally grown flowers, you support your community and its small farms.
